Installing VirtualBox on the ReadyNAS Ultra

So - I finally got around to reinstalling VB on my Ultra-4.

Here are the steps I used to install the 64 bit version of VB 3.2.8 under RAIDiator 4.2.13 - all worked perfectly first time (though hope I haven't forgotten to copy/paste something)

    cd /c/backup

    apt-get update
    apt-get install build-essential amd64-libs lib64stdc++6 bzip2 lib64z1 lzma
    apt-get --reinstall install libc6-amd64

    wget -q
    unzip -q -d ./GPL
    cd GPL/linux-
    make ARCH=x86_64
    make prepare
    ln -s /c/backup/GPL/linux- /usr/src/linux
    export KERN_DIR=/usr/src/linux

    wget -q
    chmod 755

    /etc/init.d/vboxdrv start

Note: I've also posted thess steps in the ReadyNAS Developers Forum - I'm posting them again here before they get lost in yet more pages of posts

Update 17-Oct-2010:

VirtualBox 3.2.10 working fine on RAIDiator 4.2.15, though a kernel recompilation is needed for upgrading

  1. Hi m8, googled Vbox and ReadyNAS and came across your blog, and guide to getting VBox on the ReadyNAS. It looks great, thank you.

One thing though, if I may? How much have things changed since you wrote this guide?

I'm still on v4.2.17, so I probably should update? Also, I'm assuming VBox has had a few updates too.

Is it it just a case of changing the version numbers in the Wget texts for new releases, and the rest of the guide stays the same, or are more things in need of changing?

Trying to get all the relevant updated information before I start this task. Possibly a bit anal of me, but I'd say I was just being cautious is all! :)

Whatever, thanks for the guide, and if you can help further, even better. :D

  2. You are right to be cautious.

    1. There are updated instructions for installing VirtualBox 4.x in the ReadyNAS forum I link to - specifically see here:

    2. Read further in that thread and you will note you are better off staying with firmware 4.2.17 due to apt issues with the latest 4.2.19 release (This issue is fixed in the upcoming 4.2.20 firmware update - beta available)

  3. Thanks for the prompt reply m8. Didn't expect that in reality. Nice. Thank you.

I've mostly got it working now. Vbox runs fine. I need a DDR2 boost though!!! :)

I now just need to find the correct way to call the VM via the CLi and get it called at startup. I've tried the PHPVboxMngr but it looks to my untrained eye like it failing to see, or call, my one CLi created Vbox of Kubuntu. I've had a few problems with (phpVBMngr) if truth be told, but slowly I'm getting the probs fixed, just getting the image to show is the final issue now I think. (Hope!)

    Anyway, thank you again. [y]
